Shares of Ajanta Pharma and Biocon are expected to be in focus in today’s trading session after the two drugmakers announced a strategic in-licensing agreement for semaglutide, a blockbuster molecule used in weight-loss and diabetes drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic.
Mumbai-based Ajanta Pharma has entered into an agreement with Biocon to commercialise its version of semaglutide across select emerging markets. The announcement was made after market hours on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, Biocon will supply semaglutide to Ajanta Pharma. Ajanta will have exclusive marketing rights in 23 countries and semi-exclusive rights in three countries. These markets span Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
Biocon said the partnership will help expand the global footprint of its GLP-1 portfolio, while Ajanta will leverage its strong on-ground presence to drive commercialisation.

Indian pharmaceutical companies are racing to launch generic versions of semaglutide in emerging markets. The push comes ahead of the expiry of Novo Nordisk’s product patent on the molecule in most of these markets in March 2026.
Several domestic players are preparing for early launches. Companies such as Cipla and Mankind Pharma are targeting Day 1 launches. Meanwhile, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Cipla and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories have already received approvals from the Delhi High Court to manufacture and export semaglutide to non-patent-holding countries.
“This partnership with Ajanta Pharma is a strategic step in expanding the global footprint of Biocon’s GLP-1 portfolio and maximising the value of our scientific investments in complex peptide development,” said Siddharth Mittal, chief executive officer and managing director at Biocon.
Ajanta Pharma managing director Yogesh Agrawal said the company is excited to partner with Biocon and bring the therapy to markets where Ajanta has deep reach and a strong commercial presence.
Mittal added that Ajanta’s distribution strength offers an efficient and scalable route to accelerate market access.
Ajanta said it plans to commercialise semaglutide after receiving regulatory approvals. These approvals are expected in late 2026 or early 2027.
The company will rely on its field force of over 2,000 medical representatives operating in more than 30 countries across Africa, South-East Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East.
On Tuesday, Ajanta Pharma shares declined 1.3 per cent to close at Rs 2,666.45 apiece on the BSE. The development is likely to keep both Ajanta Pharma and Biocon stocks in focus in today’s session.
