The Tata Group is set to significantly expand its footprint in Uttar Pradesh, with investments, jobs and industrial activity expected to scale up over the next five years, Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said on Tuesday.
Speaking at an event in Lucknow to mark the rollout of the 10 lakhth bus from Tata Motors Limited, Chandrasekaran said the group’s presence in the state is likely to more than double, driven by improving infrastructure, policy support and growing demand.
Uttar Pradesh emerging as key growth engine
Chandrasekaran described Uttar Pradesh as one of India’s most promising industrial destinations, pointing to rapid infrastructure development and a supportive policy environment.

He also praised the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, noting that the pace of development in the state is visible on the ground. According to him, government support has created favourable conditions for businesses to expand, opening up opportunities for large-scale investment and job creation.
With a large workforce and rising economic activity, he said the state has the potential to become a major growth engine for the country in the coming years.
Production milestone and future targets
Highlighting the group’s manufacturing base, Chandrasekaran said the Lucknow plant of Tata Motors Limited represents more than just a factory, having evolved into a broader ecosystem involving suppliers, partners and local communities.
The facility recently crossed the milestone of producing 10 lakh vehicles over 34 years. Building on this momentum, the group is targeting production of 20 lakh vehicles over the next five years.
He added that India is expected to remain one of the fastest-growing economies globally, and Uttar Pradesh is well placed to play a leading role in that journey.
TCS workforce to double in five years
Chandrasekaran also highlighted expansion plans of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in the state. The company currently employs around 20,000 professionals across Lucknow, Noida and Varanasi, and this number is expected to rise to 40,000 over the next five years.
Beyond IT services, the Tata Group is also scaling up its presence in sectors such as power, defence, retail and hospitality in the state, which is expected to create additional employment opportunities.
Focus on future mobility and exports
He noted that Tata Motors Limited is expanding its product portfolio beyond diesel vehicles to include CNG, electric and, in the future, hydrogen-based vehicles.
This transition could position Uttar Pradesh as a key manufacturing and export hub, not just for India but also for global markets.
Social initiatives alongside industrial growth
Chandrasekaran said the group’s efforts in the state are not limited to industrial expansion. The Tata Group is also involved in social initiatives such as water conservation, skill development and artificial intelligence.
Projects include rejuvenation of water sources in Mathura and the development of an AI Centre of Excellence in Gorakhpur.
He thanked the state government for its continued support, saying that policy clarity and collaboration have played an important role in enabling these initiatives.
