Spirit Airlines has announced an immediate and orderly wind-down of its operations, effective May 2, 2026. The airline confirmed that all flights have been cancelled and customer service operations have ceased.
The announcement was made by its parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc, which cited that, "despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook. With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."
The airline has urged passengers not to head to airports, as no flights will operate going forward. Spirit also clarified that it will not be able to assist customers with rebooking on other airlines, but will automatically process refunds for eligible bookings.

"All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport," the airline said in an official release.

Passengers who booked tickets directly through Spirit using credit or debit cards will receive automatic refunds to their original mode of payment. Those who made bookings via travel agents have been advised to contact their respective agents for refunds.
However, compensation for customers who used vouchers, credits, or loyalty points under the airline’s Free Spirit program will be determined later through bankruptcy proceedings.

According to CEO Dave Davis, the airline had been actively working on restructuring its business and had even reached an agreement with bondholders in March 2026 aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability.
However, a sharp and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks, combined with broader financial pressures, significantly worsened the airline’s outlook. The company required hundreds of millions of dollars in additional liquidity to continue operations—funds it was unable to secure.
“This is tremendously disappointing and not the outcome any of us wanted,” Davis said, highlighting the difficult decision to wind down operations after more than three decades in the industry.
Founded over 30 years ago, Spirit Airlines played a pioneering role in making air travel more accessible through its ultra-low-cost model, as per CEO Davis.
“For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a pioneering role in making travel more accessible and bringing people together while driving affordability across the industry,” said Davis.
The company also acknowledged support from stakeholders during its restructuring efforts, including financial firms like Citadel, Cyrus Capital, and Ares Management, as well as government bodies such as the US Department of Transportation and the US Department of Commerce.
In response to the disruption, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, through a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), said coordination with airline partners is underway to support affected passengers and employees.
"In coordination with our airline partners, we’re taking ACTION to bring relief to Spirit customers and its workforce," Duffy said.
Major US carriers, including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and Southwest Airlines, are capping ticket prices specifically for Spirit passengers who now need to rebook cancelled flights. Travellers must provide a Spirit booking reference and proof of payment to access these fares.
American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are also offering reduced fares on high-volume Spirit routes, while Allegiant Air has frozen fares on overlapping routes. Frontier Airlines is providing up to 50 per cent off base fares across its network until May 10.
Airlines across the US are extending support to Spirit employees, including pilots, cabin crew, and ground staff. These measures include travel pass benefits, spare jump-seat access, and preferential job interviews.
American Airlines and United Airlines have also launched dedicated microsites to help Spirit employees transition into new aviation roles.
Passengers affected by the shutdown have been advised of multiple options:
