IMD Latest Update: Amid a severe heat wave across the country, the southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly and has now reached very close to the Kerala coast. According to the latest update shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon could reach Kerala in 2-3 days and heavy rain is expected in Kerala between Wednesday and Sunday.
The northern limit of the monsoon is currently extending from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. Along with Kerala, conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and other areas of the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
The weather department has said that Delhi is likely to witness scattered rain and thundershowers in the coming days, along with strong winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph, which will provide some relief from the hot and humid weather.

Light to moderate rain will continue across Northeast India, with isolated heavy rain expected over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh over the coming week. Thunderstorms and strong winds are also likely over South India, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
Kerala and Lakshadweep may receive isolated heavy rainfall, while coastal Andhra Pradesh may witness thunderstorms with strong winds reaching up to 70 kmph, the weather department added.
Rain with thunder and lightning is likely over eastern states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Scattered thunderstorms are also likely over Odisha and Jharkhand. In northwest India, rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds will occur over Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand.
A warning has been issued for dust storms and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds with speeds up to 80 kmph in parts of Rajasthan, while hailstorms are likely in the hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Central and western India will also be no exception. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha, with thunderstorms possible in Vidarbha and western Madhya Pradesh. Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Maharashtra are also likely to experience heavy rain and scattered hailstorms.
In some areas, especially Konkan, where hot and humid weather is still prevailing, maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 6-8 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recorded recently was 44.8 degrees Celsius in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, while the lowest temperature was 17 degrees Celsius in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas, and take heat protection measures. Farmers have been urged to protect crops from heavy rain and hail and to ensure adequate water for livestock.
With the monsoon continuing to spread across the country, the IMD is urging both authorities and citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimise the impact of the extreme weather.
