Add Zee Business as a Preferred Source

In a significant political development, the Governor of West Bengal has dissolved the state Legislative Assembly with effect from May 7, 2026. According to an official order issued by the Governor, the decision has been taken under the authority granted by sub-clause 9(b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India.
The WB Governor, RN Ravi, in the order stated, “In exercise of the power conferred on me by sub-clause 9(b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I hereby dissolve the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal with effect from May 7, 2026.”
The dissolution effectively brings the current tenure of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to an end. Further administrative and constitutional steps are expected to follow in accordance with established procedures.





West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a press conference on Tuesday, said she will not resign or accept defeat, claiming her party was not morally defeated in recently concluded elections. “I will not resign, I did not lose, I will not go to Raj Bhavan… The question does not arise. No. Now, I also want to say we did not lose the election. It is their attempt to defeat us. Officially, through the Election Commission, they can defeat us, but morally we won the election,” she said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP won decisively in the state elections held on May 4, taking control from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The outcome is viewed as a major realignment in West Bengal politics, with the BJP achieving its strongest performance in the state so far.
A major highlight of the election was West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee’s defeat in her Bhabanipur constituency. She lost the seat to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, delivering a significant blow to the ruling party and ending a long-held political stronghold widely seen as major setback for party leadership overall in state politics.
Mamata Banerjee’s loss in Bhabanipur is being viewed as a symbolic and strategic setback for the TMC. The constituency was earlier considered an unassailable stronghold of the Chief Minister, making the result a dramatic reversal of political fortunes. The result also raises concerns over the TMC’s continued dominance in the state, where Banerjee was aiming for a fourth consecutive term.
The broader results underline the BJP’s strong performance across the state. According to ECI data, West Bengal’s 294 Assembly constituencies recorded the following outcome, with results declared for 293 seats:
