Earthquakes can occur anywhere from the Earth's surface to about 700 kilometres below. For scientific purposes, according to USGS data, earthquake depths from 0 to 700 kilometres are divided into three zones:
In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km, the USGS states.
Myanmar, due to its long coastline, is vulnerable to moderate and strong earthquakes and tsunami hazards. It lies between four tectonic plates (the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates) that interact in active geological processes.
A 1400-km-long transform fault passes through Myanmar, connecting the Andaman Spreading Centre to a collision zone called the Sagaing Fault to the north. The Sagaing Fault increases the seismic risk for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago and Yangon, which together represent 46 per cent of Myanmar's population.
Although Yangon is relatively far from seismic fault lines, it still faces significant risks due to its dense population. For example, the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Bago in 1903 also affected Yangon.
