According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Rubio briefed Modi on the “sustained progress” in bilateral cooperation across sectors including defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, connectivity, education and people-to-people ties.
Rubio also shared Washington’s perspective on key regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia.
Modi reiterated India’s consistent stand in favour of peace efforts and stressed that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He also asked Rubio to convey his warm greetings to Trump and said he looked forward to continued exchanges with the US President.
In a separate post on X, Modi said India and the United States would continue working closely for global good.
The invitation is being viewed as a strong political and strategic signal from the Trump administration at a time when both countries are increasing coordination on security, technology and supply chains.
India and the US have intensified cooperation in recent years in areas such as semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, defence production and clean energy. The proposed White House visit is expected to further strengthen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
The development also comes ahead of the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled in New Delhi on May 26, where regional security and Indo-Pacific cooperation are expected to dominate discussions.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, US Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker were among those present during the meeting.
Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette D Rubio, US Ambassador Sergio Gor and US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Robert Gabriel, arrived in New Delhi after visiting Kolkata earlier in the day.
Earlier on Saturday, Rubio visited Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and paid tribute to Mother Teresa. He praised her legacy of compassion and service in a post on X.
His Kolkata visit marked the first trip by a top American diplomat to the city in 14 years. Rubio’s four-day India visit from May 23 to 26 will also include engagements in Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.
The US Secretary of State is expected to deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy Support Annex Building during the visit.
Officials said the ongoing engagements between India and the US will mainly focus on strengthening defence partnerships, trade ties, advanced technologies, energy cooperation and collaboration under the QUAD framework.
The visit assumes significance amid growing strategic convergence between New Delhi and Washington as both countries look to expand cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region.
